The Routledge Handbook of Language and Culture presents the first comprehensive survey of research on the relationship between language and culture. It is suggested that the language produced by foreign learners is so unavoidably influenced, and even distorted, by the mother tongue of the learner that it should rather be termed an ‘Interlanguage’, since it will always be a blend of the foreign language and the mother tongue. There are, of course, many other influences at play when we learn a foreign language, but the influence that the mother tongue has on the language we produce when we use a foreign language has become a very important area of study for people interested in second language acquisition, language teaching, ELT publishing, and language in general and is usually referred to as ‘Language Interference’, ‘Transfer’, or ‘Cross-linguistic influence’. They are also in the eye of the beholder, since our individual perceptions of similarity are as individual as we are. And the apparent similarities that exist between many of the languages of the world are innumerable. This impulse will be stronger the greater the incidence of apparent similarities. It is not possible to learn a foreign language without relying to some extent on your mother tongue, and the impulse to look for similarities and to draw conclusions based on them is as strong here as in any other learning context. In most cases, textbooks and teachers’ explanations are in the students’ mother tongue, a bilingual dictionary is consulted in the early stages, and even in the classroom using the most direct language-teaching methods, the learner will still, of necessity, conduct any internal dialogue or rationalisation in their native tongue. This is certainly no less true when we set about learning a foreign language. Consciously or unconsciously, we bring what we know to what we do not, making it impossible to learn anything entirely from scratch. When confronted with something new, whether it is a new food, a different kind of music, or just new information, it is a natural instinct to look for similarities with things that are familiar, to try to draw some comparison with what we know already. This topic example is presented in the spirit of the polycontextual and multimodal approach, presenting several points of view of one topic, which represents the core of the presented e-textbook for advanced foreign language-learning In conclusion, a topic example is presented with examples coming from the native language of the author (Macedonian) along with English translation. The fourth chapter presents the etextbook intended for foreign advanced level language-learning, along with descriptions on similar projects and textbooks that exist today. Chapter number three explores the advances in foreign language learning, combining different methods and finally introducing the concept of polycontextuality in foreign language-learning, along with the basic theoretical structure the proposed e-textbook. Chapter two presents the development stages of contemporary linguoculturology and the basic terminology used in the study of this linguistic study. It also puts forth the importance of language in the creation of the language persona, which is further explained in the following chapters. The first chapter of the thesis serves as an overture to the importance of using linguoculturology in the creation of language-learning materials.
